What Is Estradiol?

Finally with completed menopause, there is ovarian failure with very low estrogen levels, usually mostly estrone (E1) produced from non-ovarian sources, adrenal, bone, retina and fat cells. Estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) are reversibly interchangeable via intrahepatic conversion.
What Is Estriol?
Estriol, or E3, is another form of estrogen. It becomes especially prominent during pregnancy, when the placenta contributes substantially to its production.
Unlike estradiol, estriol is not typically the dominant estrogen in a nonpregnant reproductive-age woman. Its production increases considerably during pregnancy and reflects interactions among the placenta, fetal adrenal glands, and maternal metabolism.
This distinction is important when comparing estriol vs estradiol because their concentrations and clinical relevance depend heavily on a person’s reproductive status.

ER-alpha is the more proliferative receptor implicated in greater risk for breast cancer, and ER-Beta is the anti-proliferative, breast cancer protective receptor. Estradiol (E2) targets both ER-alpha and ER-Beta equally, about 50% ER-alpha and 50% ER-beta. On the other hand, estriol E3, targets predominantly ER-beta, the breast cancer protective receptor. For example, someone evaluating menopausal symptoms may encounter estradiol testing, while estriol testing is more closely associated with pregnancy-related assessment.
Symptoms such as hot flashes, irregular periods, vaginal changes, sleep disruption, or mood changes cannot independently establish an estrogen imbalance. A complete medical history provides important context.
